Torn: An Emotion Your Characters Will Adore In Fiction Writing

Good evening! Have you ever experienced feeling “torn”? I witnessed someone battle with this emotion today, which jolted a memory of my own experience with it. Allow me to warn you, It is, by far, one of the most frustrating emotions for a human to experience – also one that is difficult to explain to someone who has never experienced it. I’ll give it a try…here goes… Ok, the closest I can get to describing being “torn” is “Imagine that you are faced with a decision — you experience the same emotion for both choices — at the same level of intensity – with the knowledge of a painful outcome no matter the direction of your decision.” Confusing, huh? This is how it ties to our writing. While this emotion is difficult to experience in our real, factual, world – it is excellent to allow your characters to experience it in the fiction world with your novel. This is the type of emotion that keep our readers engrossed in our stories. I would like to encourage you, fellow writers, to research this emotion, in-depth, and ‘connect’ with it to build great fiction stories.
